About Desert Point

Desert Point, also known as Bangko Bangko, is considered by many to be one of the best lefts in the world. Located in remote southwestern Lombok, this wave breaks with an almost unreal perfection, generating long, hollow, and ultra-fast barrels over a sharp and very shallow reef. It's a place for advanced and professional surfers, not only because of the technical level the wave demands, but because of the environment: isolated, raw, and with zero amenities if you're not prepared. It's an intense surf experience, both physically and mentally, and that's why it's on the dream-wave list of every serious tube rider.

Local knowledge

Hazards

Extremely shallow, razor-sharp live coral that gets dryer and more dangerous the further down the line you go — wipeouts in the "Grower" section and the inside barrel routinely leave surfers with deep reef cuts, and serious injuries here are a real risk given how remote the place is. There's a strong current running down the reef that drags you toward the bone-dry inside, so it's a constant paddle battle. On the best days the lineup gets crowded and tense, and infection from coral cuts is almost guaranteed without immediate, thorough cleaning.

Getting there

Bangko Bangko sits in the remote southwest corner of Lombok — either a long, rough drive down to the point (4WD or scooter on a sketchy track) or, more commonly, a boat/surf charter from Bali or a stay at one of the basic camps right above the break. You paddle out from the rocky/reef shelf in front of the camps; time your entry off the rocks with the sets, and exit the same way before the wave wraps onto the dry inside reef. There's no real infrastructure — bring everything, including a first-aid kit, and know the nearest proper medical help is hours away.

Board

This is a fast, hollow, down-the-line barrel, so ride something with drive and speed — a step-up pulled-in barrel board (think 6'2"–6'8" depending on size) that holds a high line and gets you through long tube sections. On the bigger, heavier days size up to a small step-up/semi-gun, and either way bring more boards than you think you'll need because the reef breaks them.

Localism

heavy — respect the lineup, locals first.

Surfing in Lombok

Full Lombok surf guide →

Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.

✈️Getting there

Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.

🛵Getting around

A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.

🌤️Climate & season

Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
