About Desert Point
Desert Point, auch bekannt als Bangko Bangko, wird von vielen als einer der besten Lefts der Welt angesehen. Diese Welle bricht in der abgelegenen, südwestlichen Ecke von Lombok mit einer fast unrealistischen Perfektion und erzeugt lange, hohle und ultra-schnelle Barrels über einem scharfen und sehr flachen Riff. Es ist ein Ort für fortgeschrittene und professionelle Surfer, nicht nur wegen des technischen Niveaus, das die Welle verlangt, sondern auch wegen der Umgebung: isoliert, rau und ohne Annehmlichkeiten, wenn man nicht vorbereitet ist. Es ist ein intensives Surferlebnis, sowohl physisch als auch mental, und deshalb steht es auf der Traumwellenliste jedes ernsthaften Tube Riders.
Local knowledge
Extrem flaches, rasiermesserscharfes lebendes Korallenriff, das weiter unten in der Linie trockener und gefährlicher wird — Stürze im "Grower"-Bereich und in der inneren Barrel hinterlassen Surfer routinemäßig mit tiefen Riffwunden, und ernsthafte Verletzungen sind hier ein echtes Risiko, da der Ort so abgelegen ist. Es gibt eine starke Strömung, die das Wasser über das Riff zieht und dich in Richtung des knochentrockenen Inneren zieht, sodass es ein ständiger Paddelkampf ist. An den besten Tagen wird die Lineup überfüllt und angespannt, und eine Infektion durch Korallenwunden ist ohne sofortige, gründliche Reinigung fast garantiert.
Bangko Bangko liegt in der abgelegenen Südwest-Ecke von Lombok — entweder eine lange, holprige Fahrt zum Punkt (4WD oder Roller auf einem unsicheren Weg) oder, häufiger, ein Boot/Surf-Charter von Bali oder ein Aufenthalt in einem der einfachen Camps direkt über dem Break. Du paddelst von dem felsigen/Riff-Sockel vor den Camps aus; timme deinen Einstieg von den Felsen mit den Sets und verlasse den Spot auf die gleiche Weise, bevor die Welle auf das trockene Innere Riff bricht. Es gibt keine wirkliche Infrastruktur — bring alles mit, einschließlich eines Erste-Hilfe-Kits, und wisse, dass die nächste richtige medizinische Hilfe Stunden entfernt ist.
Dies ist eine schnelle, hohle, down-the-line Barrel, also fahr etwas mit Drive und Geschwindigkeit — ein Step-Up Barrel Board (denk an 6'2"–6'8", je nach Größe), das eine hohe Linie hält und dich durch lange Tube-Abschnitte bringt. An den größeren, schwereren Tagen steig auf ein kleines Step-Up/Semi-Gun um, und bring auf jeden Fall mehr Boards mit, als du denkst, dass du brauchst, denn das Riff bricht sie.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
