About Senggigi Reef
Senggigi Reef sits just off the island's popular west-coast strip and delivers accessible reef-break waves that intermediate surfers will enjoy. The wave breaks with enough shape to practise proper surfing technique without the intensity of Lombok's more exposed southern spots. It can get a little choppy at times due to its position, but early mornings often reward with clean, glassy conditions. A great option for surfers based in Senggigi who want a quick session close to amenities.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide — live and sharp coral makes falls punishing, so reef booties are strongly recommended. Sea urchins hide in the reef crevices and are a real risk if you're scrambling around on the entry or exit. Boat traffic from tourist vessels and glass-bottom boats operating along the Senggigi strip can be hazardous, especially on weekends, so stay alert in the channel.
Senggigi Reef is easily accessed from the main Senggigi beach strip — park near any of the beachfront warungs or hotels along Jalan Raya Senggigi and paddle straight out from the sandy beach section. The channel to the side of the reef provides the cleanest paddle-out; aim for the obvious dark patch of reef visible from shore. Exit the same way via the channel to avoid being dragged across the coral on the inside.
A mid-length or a versatile shortboard in the 6'4"–7'0" range handles the typical conditions well; a fish or funboard is ideal on the smaller, choppier days when the wave lacks punch. Leave the high-performance potato chip at home — a little extra volume helps with the paddle and gives you more margin when the reef sections close out fast.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
🌤️Climate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
