About Echo Beach
Echo Beach is a lively reef break on Bali's Canggu coastline, best known for its punchy left-handers that peel over a shallow reef. It works well on mid to overhead swells, offering hollow sections that reward surfers who can read the peak quickly. The atmosphere is energetic, with a buzzing strip of cafés and warungs right on the beach. Intermediates will find plenty to work with, though the shallow reef demands respect at lower tides.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow and sharp — wipeouts at low tide can mean serious reef rash or lacerations, and sea urchins lurk in the cracks, so booties are worth considering. A persistent rip runs along the reef that can catch intermediates off guard, particularly on bigger swells. Boat and jet-ski traffic around the lineup is a real concern; stay alert during busy sessions.
Echo Beach is easy to find off Jalan Pantai Batu Mejan in Canggu — paid parking is available roadside and at several warungs directly behind the beach. Walk straight down through the café strip to the sand; paddle out from the main beach entry and angle north toward the peak, timing your paddle through the inside section carefully on bigger swells. Exit back onto the beach — avoid trying to clamber onto the reef.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'0"–6'4" range with a bit of extra volume handles the punchy, hollow lefts well on standard mid-overhead days. Step up to a 6'6"+ performance shortboard when it's solid overhead and the reef starts baring its teeth at low tide.

It packs an absurd density of quality breaks into a small island: machine-perfect reef barrels on the Bukit Peninsula, mellow beach breaks on the west coast, and a Bali Sea wave or two over on the east.
✈️Getting there
Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.
🛵Getting around
The default surfer transport is a scooter (110–150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high — many travellers come unstuck here.

Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — sunny, lower humidity, and the prime surf window for the south and west coasts, with consistent groundswell and clean morning offshore winds. This is peak season; expect crowds and book ahead.
