About Nangadoro
Nangadoro is an off-the-beaten-path reef break on Sumbawa that rewards adventurous intermediate surfers willing to venture away from the main Lakey Beach hub. The wave breaks with solid shape and offers good wall sections that are enjoyable for developing surfers looking to put their skills to the test. Crowds are minimal here, giving you space to surf freely and at your own pace. The remoteness adds to the charm — expect raw, unspoilt surroundings and the quiet satisfaction of finding your own slice of Sumbawa.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow and sharp in sections — coral cuts are a real risk on wipeouts, so booties are strongly recommended. Rips can develop along the reef edge, particularly on the push of a solid swell, so know your exit line before paddling out. The remoteness means no lifeguards, no nearby clinics, and limited help if something goes wrong; always surf with a buddy.
Nangadoro sits off the beaten path from the Lakey Beach hub (Hu'u) — hire a scooter or ojek and follow the coastal track southwest; locals near Nangadoro village can point you to the right path down to the water. The paddle-out is relatively straightforward in small-to-moderate swell; look for the channel on the inside edge of the reef to avoid scrambling over live coral on entry and exit. There are no dedicated warungs at the break itself, so bring water and snacks from Hu'u before heading out.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range handles the wall sections well across most conditions; bring a small-wave fish or hybrid for the flatter, mushier days when the swell drops below chest-high. There's no need for a step-up gun at intermediate swell heights, but if a solid groundswell pushes through, a slightly longer, thicker board gives you more hold on the steeper sections over the reef.

Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
🛵Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.

Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
