About Walakiri

Walakiri is a gentle beach break on Sumba's east coast, ideal for beginners and those looking for a low-key surf experience. The sandy bottom keeps things forgiving, and the waves offer friendly rides well-suited to learning the basics or simply enjoying a relaxed session. The beach itself is famous for its iconic twisted mangrove trees, making it a beautiful spot even on flat days. A perfect introduction to surfing in Sumba.

Local knowledge

Hazards

Sandy bottom keeps wipeouts forgiving, but watch for occasional rip currents that form along the beach, especially when a swell pushes through — beginners should identify the calmer channels before paddling out. Jellyfish can be present in the shallower water, and the remote east Sumba location means no lifeguards and very limited rescue support if conditions deteriorate.

Getting there

From Waingapu, head northeast toward Kalala and follow the coastal road signs to Walakiri Beach — the drive takes roughly 30–40 minutes on mostly paved road. Park near the warung at the beach entrance and walk a short distance across the sand to the water's edge; entry and exit are straightforward directly off the beach with no rocks or reef to navigate.

Board

A longboard or a high-volume funboard/malibu is the ideal choice here — the soft, rolling waves reward flotation and glide. On the rare days a larger swell arrives, a mid-length would handle it comfortably; there's no need for anything performance-orientated at this break.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumba

Full Sumba surf guide →

Sumba feels like a slip back in time — a wild, low-key island southeast of Bali that has so far escaped the development that reshaped its neighbours. Vast savannah plains, rolling hills, megalithic villages and empty golden beaches define a landscape that surfers describe as the Indonesia they were chasing all along.

✈️Getting there

Most travellers fly in via Bali (Denpasar). Sumba has two airports: Tambolaka (Waikabubak) in the west and Waingapu in the east, both served by short domestic flights from Denpasar, with some connections via Kupang or Bali several times daily.

🛵Getting around

Sumba is large and spread out, and the surf zones are far apart, so transport planning matters. Scooter rental is possible in the bigger towns, fine for short hops but tiring and exposed for long cross-island runs — and roads vary from decent asphalt to rough, potholed stretches.

🌤️Climate & season

Sumba has a pronounced dry and wet season. The dry season, roughly April to October, is prime time: cleaner conditions, dependable groundswell and the prevailing trade winds that groom the swell-exposed coasts. This is the core surf window.
