About Marosi
Marosi is a picturesque reef break on Sumba's south coast, offering long, peeling waves that intermediates will find genuinely rewarding. The wave tends to be forgiving on its entry but builds into satisfying walls further along, giving plenty of opportunity to work on turns and timing. The setting — a sweeping bay backed by green hills — is stunning and sees very few surfers. It's the kind of place that makes the journey to Sumba worthwhile.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide and sharp enough to cause serious lacerations, so wipe-outs in the shallower inside section demand respect — booties are worth considering. Sea urchins lurk in the reef crevices, and the rip channels that form on either side of the bay can run deceptively strong after solid south swells push through. Boat traffic is minimal, but jellyfish can be present during certain seasons.
Marosi sits about 55 km southwest of Waingapu — take the coastal road toward Lamboya and follow signs to Pantai Marosi; the final stretch is a rough dirt track best handled by a motorbike or 4WD. Park near the small warung at the bay, then it's a short walk down to the beach; paddle out via the deeper channel on the left side of the bay to avoid scrambling over exposed reef. Exit via the same channel or walk the inside shallows carefully at higher tide.
Your everyday shortboard (6'0"–6'4") handles the typical waist-to-head-high lines here well; bring a fish or mid-length on smaller, mushier days when the wave needs extra paddle power to make the longer sections. If a solid south groundswell is running and the wave is pushing overhead and beyond, a step-up with a bit more volume underfoot will keep you comfortable through the building walls.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumba
Full Sumba surf guide →Sumba feels like a slip back in time — a wild, low-key island southeast of Bali that has so far escaped the development that reshaped its neighbours. Vast savannah plains, rolling hills, megalithic villages and empty golden beaches define a landscape that surfers describe as the Indonesia they were chasing all along.
✈️Getting there
Most travellers fly in via Bali (Denpasar). Sumba has two airports: Tambolaka (Waikabubak) in the west and Waingapu in the east, both served by short domestic flights from Denpasar, with some connections via Kupang or Bali several times daily.
🛵Getting around
Sumba is large and spread out, and the surf zones are far apart, so transport planning matters. Scooter rental is possible in the bigger towns, fine for short hops but tiring and exposed for long cross-island runs — and roads vary from decent asphalt to rough, potholed stretches.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumba has a pronounced dry and wet season. The dry season, roughly April to October, is prime time: cleaner conditions, dependable groundswell and the prevailing trade winds that groom the swell-exposed coasts. This is the core surf window.
