About Puru Kambera
Puru Kambera is a beach break on Sumba's east coast that punches a little harder than the island's gentler shorelines, attracting intermediate surfers after more dynamic rides. The waves can be fast and shifty, rewarding surfers who read the break well and stay on their toes. The wide, wild beach stretches seemingly without end, and the crowd is almost always nonexistent. A raw and rewarding surf experience on a strikingly beautiful coastline.
Local knowledge
Shore dump and shifting sandbars can produce powerful, unpredictable close-outs — paddle out with care and pick your entry point well. Strong rips run along the beach, especially after bigger swells, and are the most consistent danger here; if caught, angle out rather than fight them. This is a remote east Sumba coastline, so there are no lifeguards, help is a long way off, and any injury needs to be managed with that isolation in mind.
Head east from Waingapu along the coastal road toward Kambera; the beach is signposted or visible from the road and basic parking is possible at the roadside near the shoreline. Walk directly down the sand, read the banks before you paddle, and choose a rip or calmer channel for your paddle-out — the entry is straightforward on smaller days but demands more attention when the swell builds. There are no permanent warungs at the break itself, so bring your own water and snacks.
A versatile shortboard or a slightly fuller performance shape (around 6'2"–6'6") suits the fast, shifting beach break best, giving you enough volume to catch the punchier walls without losing maneuverability. On smaller, weaker days a fish or hybrid will help you generate speed through the softer sections; save the step-up for when solid southeast swells push the size above head-high.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumba
Full Sumba surf guide →Sumba feels like a slip back in time — a wild, low-key island southeast of Bali that has so far escaped the development that reshaped its neighbours. Vast savannah plains, rolling hills, megalithic villages and empty golden beaches define a landscape that surfers describe as the Indonesia they were chasing all along.
✈️Getting there
Most travellers fly in via Bali (Denpasar). Sumba has two airports: Tambolaka (Waikabubak) in the west and Waingapu in the east, both served by short domestic flights from Denpasar, with some connections via Kupang or Bali several times daily.
🛵Getting around
Sumba is large and spread out, and the surf zones are far apart, so transport planning matters. Scooter rental is possible in the bigger towns, fine for short hops but tiring and exposed for long cross-island runs — and roads vary from decent asphalt to rough, potholed stretches.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumba has a pronounced dry and wet season. The dry season, roughly April to October, is prime time: cleaner conditions, dependable groundswell and the prevailing trade winds that groom the swell-exposed coasts. This is the core surf window.
