About Mandorak
Mandorak is a reef break on Sumba's southwest coast that delivers solid, well-shaped waves for intermediate surfers. The break offers a mix of walls and steeper sections, giving riders a chance to link turns or test their barrel-reading skills on better days. Like much of Sumba, crowds are rarely an issue here, and the wild coastal scenery adds to the sense of escape. A rewarding stop for surfers willing to venture off the main trail.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow, sharp, and lined with live coral — a wipeout on a low-tide set can put you on the bottom fast, so booties and caution on the draw are strongly advised. Sea urchins colonise the reef shelf near the entry zone, and there's a persistent rip along the reef edge that can sweep you off the peak if you're not actively paddling back into position. Remote location means no lifeguard, limited phone signal, and the nearest real medical help is a long drive away — treat every session with that in mind.
Mandorak sits on Sumba's rugged southwest coast; you'll need a reliable 4WD or motorbike to navigate the unsealed tracks off the Waikabubak–Waingapu road, as signage is minimal and the final stretch deteriorates in the wet season. A local warung or guesthouse in the nearby village is your best landmark and a smart stop for asking about current reef conditions and the safest water entry point. Paddle out along the channel beside the reef rather than paddling straight over the flat — this keeps you off the coral and gives you a cleaner route to the lineup.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range with a bit of extra volume handles Mandorak's mix of walls and punchier sections well; step up to a 6'8"–7'0" when solid south swells push overhead-plus surf onto the reef. On rare smaller, mushier days a fish or mid-length will help you make the most of the wave energy.

✈️Getting there
Most travellers fly in via Bali (Denpasar). Sumba has two airports: Tambolaka (Waikabubak) in the west and Waingapu in the east, both served by short domestic flights from Denpasar, with some connections via Kupang or Bali several times daily.
🛵Getting around
Sumba is large and spread out, and the surf zones are far apart, so transport planning matters. Scooter rental is possible in the bigger towns, fine for short hops but tiring and exposed for long cross-island runs — and roads vary from decent asphalt to rough, potholed stretches.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumba has a pronounced dry and wet season. The dry season, roughly April to October, is prime time: cleaner conditions, dependable groundswell and the prevailing trade winds that groom the swell-exposed coasts. This is the core surf window.
