About Landu Leko
Landu Leko is a scenic reef break on Rote that offers intermediate surfers a quality wave in a stunning, off-the-beaten-path setting. The wave provides shapely, fun walls that are perfect for building confidence and style. Swell size and wind direction can affect it significantly, so it's worth timing your visit. The remoteness keeps crowds low and the vibe relaxed.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide with sharp coral and sea urchins lurking in the impact zone — a wipeout at the wrong moment can result in a serious reef rash or urchin spines, so booties are worth considering. A moderate rip runs along the reef edge and can catch you off guard on the paddle back out; read the channel before entering. Boat traffic is minimal but keep an eye out during busy transfer windows near the beach.
Rote is reached by a short domestic flight or ferry from Kupang (West Timor) — fly or sail into Ba'a, then take a hired ojek or rental scooter roughly 1–1.5 hours southeast toward the Landu area; ask locals at the warung near the beach track for the final sandy trail down to the water. Entry is best timed through the natural channel on the reef's shoulder — avoid paddling straight over the dry reef section at lower tides. There's no formal car park; park up near the tree line and watch your gear.
A versatile shortboard or a mid-length funboard in the 7'0"–7'6" range handles the fun, shapely walls well on the majority of swells. On bigger, punchier days step up to a 6'4"–6'8" performance shortboard with a bit more volume to handle the additional speed and hold through the sections.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Rote
Full Rote surf guide →Rote is Indonesia's southernmost inhabited island, a low, dry, sun-bleached slip of land hanging off the bottom of Timor in East Nusa Tenggara. It's about as far from the Bali crowds as you can get and still find world-class surf — which is exactly the point. The scene revolves around the village of Nemberala (Nembrala) on the west coast, where a string of guesthouses, surf camps and warungs line up behind the reef.
✈️Getting there
Reaching Rote is half the adventure. First fly to Kupang (Timor) — El Tari Airport (KOE) — via Bali (Denpasar) or Jakarta, usually with a connection. From Kupang's Bolok harbour you take the fast ferry across to Rote's port at Ba'a, a crossing of roughly 1.5–2 hours; a slower car ferry also runs but takes longer.
🛵Getting around
Once you're in Nemberala, most of the popular waves are close — T-Land, Boa and the beach breaks are within easy reach, and several spots are walkable or a short paddle from the main strip.
🌤️Climate & season
Rote has a pronounced dry, savanna-like climate — drier than Bali and noticeably so. The dry season runs roughly May to October and is the surf season: this is when consistent groundswell arrives and the dependable southeast trade winds groom the west-coast lefts, holding most of the season's offshore conditions.
