About Rockstar
Rockstar is a high-performance reef break on Nias that delivers steep, fast walls with serious punch, tailor-made for advanced surfers looking to push their aerial and power surfing. The wave jacks up quickly over the reef, giving a short but intense ride that rewards precise positioning and explosive surfing. It works best on a solid groundswell and can be surprisingly hollow on the right tide. A willing reef makes caution essential, but the rewards on a good day are well worth it.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow, sharp, and unforgiving — a wipeout at the wrong moment can mean a serious scraping or worse, especially when the wave is hollow and jacking hard on the right tide. Sea urchins colonise the reef shelf, so booties are strongly recommended for entry and exit. Rips can run along the reef on bigger swells, making a long paddle back to the peak likely if you get caught inside.
Rockstar is accessible by a short boat ride from Sorake Beach or the main surf camps along the Lagundri Bay strip — most accommodation will organise transfers. Entry and exit are boat-assisted, which is strongly preferred given the sharp reef; do not attempt to paddle out over the reef on a solid swell. Coordinate with your skipper for pick-up, as the exit over the reef can be dicey if the swell drops mid-session.
A high-performance shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range is ideal for the steep, punchy walls on a standard swell; step up to a 6'8"–7'0" step-up when it's solid and grinding to handle the extra speed and power through the take-off. Leave the fish at home — this wave demands a board with hold and drive, not float.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Nias
Full Nias surf guide →Off the west coast of North Sumatra, Nias is one of Indonesia's true surf landmarks — home to Lagundri Bay, the right-hand point at the island's southern tip that put the country on the world surf map back in the 1970s. It's a place of pilgrimage, where a single peeling wall over coral has drawn travelling surfers for decades.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers fly into Binaka Airport (GNS) at Gunungsitoli in the north of Nias, usually via Medan (Kualanamu, KNO) on a short domestic hop with Wings Air or similar. From Bali or Jakarta you'll connect through Medan.
🛵Getting around
At Lagundri Bay everything is walkable — the losmen sit right along the point, and you can paddle out from the steps. Many guests don't need transport at all once settled.
🌤️Climate & season
Nias has a tropical equatorial climate — warm and humid year-round, with water temperatures sitting around 27–29°C, so boardshorts and a rash guard are plenty (boots for the reef, not warmth).
