About Indicators
Indicators sits at the far end of Lagundri Bay and catches the swell before it wraps into the main point, producing fast, hollow sections over a shallow reef. It's a more demanding wave than the Point itself, with steep take-offs and powerful walls that punish hesitation. Advanced surfers will relish the speed and the occasional barrel, but the shallow reef requires confident positioning and a solid wipeout strategy. Paddle out when the swell is pumping for the best of what this spot has to offer.
Local knowledge
The reef at Indicators is shallow, sharp, and unforgiving — a heavy wipeout on a bigger set can put you directly onto exposed coral, so board shorts and a rash vest won't cut it on serious days (boardshorts and reef booties are wise). A strong lateral current runs across the bay and can sweep you off the peak or make paddling back from a hold-down a real effort. Sea urchins colonise the reef shelf near the entry zone, so avoid putting your feet down anywhere but the sandy channel.
Indicators is at the northern end of Lagundri Bay, a short walk down the beach from the main Point warungs at Sorake — follow the beach track past the cluster of guesthouses and you'll see the peak breaking further out on the reef. Paddle out via the sandy channel that runs along the northern edge; don't attempt to paddle straight over the reef flat. Exit through the same channel and watch the lateral drift — it's easy to get pushed down the bay toward the Point crowd on your way in.
A performance shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range handles most Indicators days well — you need the drive and hold to match the speed of the wall. Step up to a stiffer, thicker step-up (6'6"–7'0") when solid swell is wrapping in; the steep take-offs demand extra paddle power and the extra volume helps you commit without hesitating over the reef.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Nias
Full Nias surf guide →Off the west coast of North Sumatra, Nias is one of Indonesia's true surf landmarks — home to Lagundri Bay, the right-hand point at the island's southern tip that put the country on the world surf map back in the 1970s. It's a place of pilgrimage, where a single peeling wall over coral has drawn travelling surfers for decades.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers fly into Binaka Airport (GNS) at Gunungsitoli in the north of Nias, usually via Medan (Kualanamu, KNO) on a short domestic hop with Wings Air or similar. From Bali or Jakarta you'll connect through Medan.
🛵Getting around
At Lagundri Bay everything is walkable — the losmen sit right along the point, and you can paddle out from the steps. Many guests don't need transport at all once settled.
🌤️Climate & season
Nias has a tropical equatorial climate — warm and humid year-round, with water temperatures sitting around 27–29°C, so boardshorts and a rash guard are plenty (boots for the reef, not warmth).
