About Are Guling Right

Are Guling Right is the right-hand counterpart at the same break, giving the spot a dual personality that keeps the lineup interesting. The right-hander tends to be slightly more forgiving than the left, with longer walls that are ideal for frontside surfing and working on progression. Intermediates will appreciate the consistent shape and the fact that the crowd is rarely heavy this far from Bali. A great spot to put in quality time in the water.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is shallow and sharp at low tide — wipeouts can result in serious lacerations, and sea urchins lurk in the crevices so booties are worth considering. A moderate channel rip runs alongside the break and can sweep you wide of the exit if you're not paying attention. Boat traffic from passing fishing vessels and occasional tourist boats warrants awareness when paddling out.

Getting there

Are Guling sits along Lombok's southwest coast near Belongas Bay — take the coastal road south from Praya toward Belongas and look for the track down to the beach near the local fishing village. Park at the warung near the sand and paddle straight out through the channel on the left side of the break; exit the same way to avoid being pushed onto the inside reef section.

Board

A versatile shortboard (6'2"–6'6") or a performance mid-length suits the longer, workable walls on offer here. On smaller, weaker days a fish or hybrid will help you generate speed through the flatter sections; bring a step-up if a solid swell pushes through and the wave starts pitching harder off the reef.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Lombok

Full Lombok surf guide →

Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.

✈️Getting there

Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.

🛵Getting around

A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.

🌤️Climate & season

Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
