About Raijua Reefs
Tiny Raijua, just off the western tip of Savu, punches well above its size with sharply defined reef breaks that can throw serious barrels on the right swell. The waves are fast and technical, suiting experienced surfers who are comfortable reading shallow, live reef. Crowds are virtually nonexistent, but logistics are demanding and back-up support is scarce. Those willing to make the journey are rewarded with a raw, unspoiled surf experience at the edge of the map.
Local knowledge
Shallow, live coral reef is the primary threat — wipeouts at low tide can mean serious lacerations, and the reef here is sharp enough to cut through a wetsuit. Strong, unpredictable rips run between the reef sections, and with virtually no rescue infrastructure on the island, a bad hold-down or injury becomes a serious situation fast. Sea urchins colonise the shallower shelves, so reef booties are strongly advised; there are no medical facilities on Raijua itself.
Raijua is accessible only by small boat from Seba, the main port town on Savu (Sabu) island — the crossing takes roughly 1–2 hours depending on conditions and vessel. Charter a local wooden boat (jukung or small motorised ferry) in Seba; there is no regular public boat service, so arrange this in advance through your accommodation or a liveaboard operator. Entry into the lineup is a channel paddle from a boat anchor — there is no beach; you go directly from the boat to the break and back again, so a reliable boat driver you trust is non-negotiable.
Bring a quiver: a high-performance shortboard (6'2"–6'6") for the technical barrel sections on overhead-to-double-overhead swells, and a step-up (6'8"–7'2") for when the Indian Ocean groundswell pushes the reef into heavier, ledging territory. Leave the longboard at home — these waves move fast and a wider outline will work against you on the sharp inside sections.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Timor
Full Timor surf guide →Timor sits at the far southeastern end of the Indonesian archipelago, in the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), sharing the island with the independent nation of Timor-Leste. For surfers, it's the gritty, frontier alternative to Bali's polish — a place where you trade comfort and crowds for empty line-ups, raw landscapes and genuine exploration.
✈️Getting there
The gateway is Kupang's El Tari Airport (KOE), with regular domestic flights from Bali (Denpasar) — around 1.5 hours — and connections via Jakarta, Surabaya and Labuan Bajo. Some smaller carriers link Kupang to the outer islands.
🛵Getting around
On Timor itself, scooter and motorbike rental is the most flexible way to reach spots like Tablolong, Oetune and Kolbano — though Kolbano is a serious drive (several hours east of Kupang). Cars with a driver are widely available in Kupang and worth it for longer hauls or if you're hauling boards and gear.
🌤️Climate & season
Timor has one of the most pronounced dry seasons in Indonesia, sitting in a rain-shadowed, savanna-like corner of NTT. The dry season runs roughly May to October — and this is also prime surf time, when consistent southeast trade winds groom the swells and rainfall is minimal.
