About Wane
Wane is a fun, intermediatelevel reef break in Sumbawa that delivers peeling, rippable waves with a lively character. The wave has enough shape and speed to develop your surfing without throwing you into dangerously heavy barrels. It suits surfers who are comfortable on reef and looking to push their turns and read faster lines. A solid all-round spot that offers variety as the tide and swell direction shift throughout the day.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide — sharp coral and sea urchins make wipeouts costly, so booties are strongly recommended. A moderate rip runs along the channel on the side of the break; use it to paddle out efficiently but watch that it doesn't drag you wide of the lineup on your way back in. Boat traffic from passing fishing vessels and charter boats can be an issue during busy swells, so stay alert in the channel.
Wane is most commonly reached by boat charter out of Hu'u or via a surf camp transfer — there is no easy direct beach walk to the lineup. Day-trip boats anchor in the channel and double as your rest spot between sessions; confirm the skipper's anchor position before paddling out so you have a clear reference point for entry and exit. If staying locally, warungs and guesthouses in Hu'u can arrange boat transfers and will brief you on current conditions before departure.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'0"–6'4" range suits the wave's rippable, peeling character on standard 3–5 ft days — something with a touch of extra volume to keep you moving through the slightly faster sections. Step up to a 6'6"–6'8" when solid south swells push the size over 6 ft and the reef starts to expose itself more aggressively.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Sumbawa
Full Sumbawa surf guide →Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
🛵Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
