About Periscopes

Periscopes is a quirky and entertaining reef break in the Lakey Beach area of Sumbawa, known for its unusual, square-ish peaks that pop up across the reef. The wave suits intermediate surfers well, offering punchy sections and some surprisingly hollow moments without the raw consequence of its heavier neighbours. It tends to pick up swell reliably and handles a range of conditions, making it a go-to backup when other spots are maxed out. Fun, varied and a touch offbeat — it lives up to its curious name.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is shallow at low tide and lined with sharp, live coral and sea urchins — booties are strongly recommended. The unusual multi-peak setup means wave priorities shift unpredictably, increasing collision risk when the lineup gets busy. A moderate rip runs along the reef edge on larger swells; use it to get out but don't let it drag you sideways into the bommie sections.

Getting there

Periscopes sits within the Lakey Beach break cluster — park up at the main Lakey Beach warungs and walk the short track south along the beach. Paddle out from the sandy channel to the right of the reef to avoid the shallowest sections; on the way in, aim back for that same sandy strip and don't get pushed onto the reef shelf by the close-out section.

Board

A versatile shortboard or a mid-length funboard in the 6'4"–7'0" range works well given the punchy, varied peaks — the extra float helps you connect the quirkier sections. On small, gutless days a fish or hybrid will unlock the most fun; if a solid swell pushes through, step up to a slightly thicker, higher-volume shortboard to handle the hollow moments with control.

Localism

moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Sumbawa

Full Sumbawa surf guide →

Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.

✈️Getting there

Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.

🛵Getting around

Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.

🌤️Climate & season

Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
