About Lakey Pipe
Lakey Pipe is Sumbawa's most intense wave — a thick, dredging barrel that pitches hard over a shallow reef and demands everything an advanced surfer has. On a solid swell it produces some of the most photogenic tubes in Indonesia, with a fast takeoff and a powerful, unforgiving lip. Respect for the reef is essential, as wipeouts here can be heavy. Those who can handle its raw power will be rewarded with world-class rides in a strikingly remote setting.
Local knowledge
The reef at Lakey Pipe is extremely shallow — less than a metre at low tide on the inside — and razor-sharp, making wipeouts genuinely dangerous with lacerations and worse a real possibility; helmets and reef booties are seriously worth considering on bigger days. A strong lateral current runs along the reef and can sweep you into the rocks or the closeout section if you linger too long after a wipeout. Crowds and boat traffic are a factor during peak season (June–September), and with multiple surfers competing for the same short-window barrel, collisions on the takeoff are an added risk.
Lakey Pipe sits in front of the cluster of losmen and warungs in Lakey Beach — fly into Bima (Sultan Muhammad Salahuddin Airport) then take a two-hour road transfer to Hu'u village. Park or leave your board bag at your accommodation on the beachfront strip, then it's a short 5-minute walk across the sand to the channel entry on the northern end of the beach; paddle out through the channel to avoid the reef, and always use that same channel for your exit rather than attempting a shore pound exit over shallow coral.
On standard 4–6 ft days, a high-performance shortboard (6'0"–6'4") with a bit of extra thickness will help you drive through the thick, sucking lip and hold a line in the barrel. When Pipe stands up over 6 ft, step up to a semi-gun or step-up (6'4"–6'8") with a narrower tail and solid rocker — the wave punishes anything that can't hold rail under a heavy, pitching lip.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Sumbawa
Full Sumbawa surf guide →Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
🛵Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
