About Jimmy's Right

Jimmy's Right is a powerful, hollow reef break in the Hu'u area of Sumbawa that throws up fast, punchy walls ideal for advanced surfers hunting quality barrels. The wave breaks over a sharp reef and can deliver long, grinding right-handers when the swell lines up. Crowds are usually thin compared to more famous Indonesian setups, rewarding those willing to make the trip. Respect the reef and be prepared for heavy consequences on bigger sets.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is extremely shallow and razor-sharp at low tide — wipeouts on solid sets can result in serious lacerations, and sea urchins lurk in the reef crevices, so booties are worth considering. A strong lateral current runs along the reef on bigger swells, making it easy to get dragged out of position or pushed toward the rocky inside section; know your exit before you paddle out. Boat traffic from fishing vessels and the occasional transfer boat cuts through the channel, so stay aware when paddling out.

Getting there

Hu'u village is the base — most surfers stay at one of the local losmen or surf camps near Lakey Peak and ride a short ojek (motorbike taxi) or walk the dusty track west to reach Jimmy's Right. Entry is via the channel on the inside of the reef; time your paddle-out between sets and aim for the deeper water to the south of the peak to avoid being dragged across the coral. There are a couple of warungs near the Lakey Peak area for food and drinks, but bring water if you're spending a long session at this end of the bay.

Board

On everyday 3–5 ft days your regular performance shortboard is perfect for carving the fast walls, but bring a step-up (6'4"–6'8", with extra volume and a bit of rocker) for when solid 6 ft+ groundswell hits and the barrels get long and heavy. Leave the fish at home — this wave rewards a board that can drive through a heaving section, not one that will get bucked on the takeoff.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumbawa

Full Sumbawa surf guide →

Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.

✈️Getting there

Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.

🛵Getting around

Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.

🌤️Climate & season

Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
