About Krui Left
Krui Left is a reef break delivering fun, workable left-handers along Sumatra's famed Krui coastline. The wave suits intermediates well, offering a forgiving face with enough power to practice turns and cutbacks. Conditions can vary with swell size and tide, so a little patience usually pays off with cleaner, more defined sets. It's a great complement to the heavier breaks in the area for those building confidence on reef.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide — sharp coral and scattered sea urchins make a wipeout on the inside a real concern, so booties are strongly recommended for less experienced feet. A moderate rip runs along the reef's edge on bigger swells, which can drag you off the take-off zone if you're not paddling actively. Crowds are manageable most of the year but can build during peak dry season as Krui's profile has grown significantly.
Krui Left sits along the Krui coastline road (Jl. Lintas Barat Sumatera), easily spotted from the tarmac — park at or near one of the small warungs that line the shore and serve as informal surfer hangouts. Entry is a short rocky scramble or sandy beach section depending on tide; paddle out around the reef's shoulder to avoid the shallower sections on the inside. Exit through the channel on the northern end of the break to keep clear of the reef on the way back in.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range handles the majority of conditions here well, giving you enough paddle power for the punchier sets while still being responsive on the open face. On smaller, mushier days a fish or mid-length will keep the session fun; if a solid swell pushes through, step up to a slightly fuller, more rockered board to handle the extra speed and steeper sections.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Sumatra
Full Sumatra surf guide →Sumatra is Indonesia's wild western frontier — the sixth-largest island on earth and arguably the country's deepest, most varied surf zone. Where Bali trades on crowds and nightlife, Sumatra deals in space, jungle backdrops and waves that still feel earned. The swell window here is enormous: the same Indian Ocean groundswells that light up the rest of the archipelago hit Sumatra's exposed western flank first, raw and unfiltered.
✈️Getting there
Most surf trips funnel through Padang, the launch point for the Mentawais, Telos and Banyaks. Fly into Padang (Minangkabau Airport, PDG) via Jakarta — and Jakarta connects to Bali and international hubs like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
🛵Getting around
On the Sumatran mainland and on Nias, a scooter is the cheap, flexible standard — expect potholed roads, livestock and long, scenic distances between zones. Around Krui the coastal road links a string of spots over many kilometres, so a bike (or a hired car with driver for groups and boards) earns its keep.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumatra straddles the equator, so it's hot and humid year-round with water warm enough for boardshorts (a rashguard or 1mm top is plenty).
