About Aceh - Lampuuk
Lampuuk is a wide, open beach break near Banda Aceh that offers gentle, rolling waves perfect for beginners and those just getting started. The sandy bottom keeps things safe and forgiving, and the broad stretch of coastline provides plenty of peaks to choose from. It's a beautiful and historically significant beach with a warm community feel and an easy surf atmosphere. A welcoming entry point to surfing on Sumatra's northern tip.
Local knowledge
Sandy bottom makes this one of Sumatra's more forgiving breaks, but watch for strong rip currents that can develop between sandbars, especially during bigger swells or outgoing tides — beginners should stay close to shore and pick calm days. Jellyfish occasionally drift into the bay, and boat traffic from fishing vessels operating near the beach warrants awareness. During the wet season, onshore winds can make the surf messy and conditions harder to read for inexperienced surfers.
Lampuuk Beach is about 15 km southwest of Banda Aceh city — follow Jl. Lampuuk from the main road and look for the beachside warung clusters that mark the main surf area. Parking is easy on the roadside or in informal lots near the warungs; paddle entry is straightforward from the wide, gently sloping beach with no rocks or reef to navigate. Exit anywhere along the sandy shore — there's no single tricky exit point, which is part of what makes this spot so beginner-friendly.
A longboard or a wide, high-volume mini-mal (8'0–9'6) is ideal here, giving beginners the float and stability to catch Lampuuk's small, rolling peaks with ease. On the rare bigger swell, a mid-length fun board will handle the extra punch without being overkill.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumatra
Full Sumatra surf guide →Sumatra is Indonesia's wild western frontier — the sixth-largest island on earth and arguably the country's deepest, most varied surf zone. Where Bali trades on crowds and nightlife, Sumatra deals in space, jungle backdrops and waves that still feel earned. The swell window here is enormous: the same Indian Ocean groundswells that light up the rest of the archipelago hit Sumatra's exposed western flank first, raw and unfiltered.
✈️Getting there
Most surf trips funnel through Padang, the launch point for the Mentawais, Telos and Banyaks. Fly into Padang (Minangkabau Airport, PDG) via Jakarta — and Jakarta connects to Bali and international hubs like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
🛵Getting around
On the Sumatran mainland and on Nias, a scooter is the cheap, flexible standard — expect potholed roads, livestock and long, scenic distances between zones. Around Krui the coastal road links a string of spots over many kilometres, so a bike (or a hired car with driver for groups and boards) earns its keep.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumatra straddles the equator, so it's hot and humid year-round with water warm enough for boardshorts (a rashguard or 1mm top is plenty).
