About Simeulue - Thailand's

Thailand's is a fun and approachable reef break on Simeulue with a laid-back character that suits intermediate surfers nicely. The wave tends to offer consistent, rippable walls with enough push to make for enjoyable sessions across a range of swell sizes. It's a crowd-free escape where you can surf at your own pace and enjoy the natural beauty of the island between sets. A solid choice for those exploring Simeulue's diverse surf options.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is live coral and can be surprisingly shallow at low tide — falls and wipeouts carry a real risk of coral cuts and grazes, so reef booties are worth considering. Sea urchins lurk in the reef cracks, so shuffle your feet if you're walking the reef on entry or exit. Rips can form along the reef edge on larger swells; use them to paddle out but know where they'll take you.

Getting there

Simeulue is reached by flight from Medan or by ferry from Sinabang, and most surfers explore the island's breaks by motorbike or through a local surf camp package. Thailand's is accessible from the nearest coastal track — look for the warung or fishing boats that mark the path down to the water. Entry is typically a short paddle over shallow reef, so time it to mid-to-high tide to protect yourself from the worst of the coral.

Board

A versatile shortboard (6'0"–6'4") or a fun-shape in the 7' range suits this wave well across typical conditions, giving you enough volume to paddle into the rippable walls without losing responsiveness. On smaller, punchier days a fish or mid-length will keep things fun; save any step-up for the rare solid swell that adds some extra punch to the reef.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Simeulue

Full Simeulue surf guide →

Tucked off the northwest tip of Sumatra in the province of Aceh, Simeulue is one of Indonesia's most underrated surf islands — a low-key, jungle-fringed outpost where empty reef passes still outnumber surfers on most days. It sits in the same swell-rich corner of the Indian Ocean as the Mentawais and the Hinakos, but with a fraction of the crowds and a far easier journey than the boat-only Ments.

✈️Getting there

Getting to Simeulue is easier than most remote Sumatran surf islands. The usual route is a domestic flight from Medan (Kualanamu International Airport) on mainland Sumatra to Simeulue's airport near Sinabang, the island's main town. Flights run roughly daily on small aircraft, so even shorter trips are feasible.

🛵Getting around

Once on Simeulue, the simplest option is a scooter. Many homestays and resorts can sort a rental, and a bike gives you freedom to check different reefs and beaches at your own pace. Roads on the main routes are reasonable but expect rougher, potholed stretches and the odd river crossing once you head off the spine of the island.

🌤️Climate & season

Simeulue is tropical and warm all year, with water temperatures comfortable for boardshorts or a thin top — no wetsuit needed.
