About Simeulue - Jackals

Jackals is a raw and uncompromising reef break on Simeulue that demands respect and experience. When the swell is up, it delivers fast, heavy waves that test positioning, commitment, and tube-riding ability. Advanced surfers who make the effort will find one of the island's most thrilling and least-crowded waves. Not a spot for experimenting — come prepared and know your limits.

Local knowledge

Hazards

Shallow, sharp live coral reef is the primary danger — a wipeout on a bigger set can result in serious lacerations or worse, so booties and a helmet are worth considering. The reef shelf is uneven and can catch fins on exit; sea urchins are present in the shallower sections toward the channel. Rips and lateral currents can push you off the channel entry line, particularly on the dropping tide — know where the safe water is before you paddle out.

Getting there

Simeulue is reached by ferry from Meulaboh or Sinabang on the Acehnese coast, or by charter flight into Sinabang (SNB). Jackals is best accessed by boat — most surfers base themselves at one of Simeulue's surf camps or charter a local jukung from Sinabang or a nearby kampung; confirm conditions and the safest channel entry with your skipper before jumping in. There is no meaningful beachside infrastructure at the break itself, so carry everything you need onboard.

Board

Bring a proven shortboard step-up — something in the 6'4"–6'10" range with enough volume to paddle into fast, thick reef waves and hold a line through the barrel. On rare smaller days a performance shortboard works, but do not bother bringing a fish or fun shape; this wave rewards drive and rail, not floatiness.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Simeulue

Full Simeulue surf guide →

Tucked off the northwest tip of Sumatra in the province of Aceh, Simeulue is one of Indonesia's most underrated surf islands — a low-key, jungle-fringed outpost where empty reef passes still outnumber surfers on most days. It sits in the same swell-rich corner of the Indian Ocean as the Mentawais and the Hinakos, but with a fraction of the crowds and a far easier journey than the boat-only Ments.

✈️Getting there

Getting to Simeulue is easier than most remote Sumatran surf islands. The usual route is a domestic flight from Medan (Kualanamu International Airport) on mainland Sumatra to Simeulue's airport near Sinabang, the island's main town. Flights run roughly daily on small aircraft, so even shorter trips are feasible.

🛵Getting around

Once on Simeulue, the simplest option is a scooter. Many homestays and resorts can sort a rental, and a bike gives you freedom to check different reefs and beaches at your own pace. Roads on the main routes are reasonable but expect rougher, potholed stretches and the odd river crossing once you head off the spine of the island.

🌤️Climate & season

Simeulue is tropical and warm all year, with water temperatures comfortable for boardshorts or a thin top — no wetsuit needed.
