About Boa Right
Boa Right is the less-celebrated counterpart to T-Land, breaking in the opposite direction across the same reef system at Nembrala. It offers a fun, workable right-hander that gives intermediate surfers an alternative when the left is maxing out or too crowded. The wave tends to be shorter than its famous neighbour but still delivers clean, open faces ideal for practising turns. It's a handy option to have in the quiver when exploring the Rote coastline.
Local knowledge
The same sharp, shallow coral reef that powers T-Land runs beneath Boa Right, so a wipeout at low tide can put you on exposed live coral in a hurry — booties are strongly recommended. A persistent rip runs along the reef edge and can drag you toward the T-Land peak if you're not actively paddling to hold position. Sea urchins colonise the reef shelf near the channel, so avoid stepping or falling on the shallower sections during entry and exit.
Head to Nembrala village on Rote's southwest coast — most surfers stay at one of the guesthouses or warungs lining the beachfront track, all within easy walking distance of the water. Paddle out through the same channel used for T-Land, then work your way to the right-hand peak further along the reef; the channel provides a relatively safe entry and exit. No boat is required, but a short-hop boat transfer from the channel mouth can save energy on bigger days when the paddle across is trickier.
A versatile shortboard (6'0"–6'4") or a rounded-pin in the same range handles the open, workable faces well across most conditions. On smaller, mushier days bring a fish or a groveller to generate speed through the flatter sections; if a solid swell is running and the wave is standing up more critically, step up half an inch or an inch in length for added drive through the turns.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Rote
Full Rote surf guide →Rote is Indonesia's southernmost inhabited island, a low, dry, sun-bleached slip of land hanging off the bottom of Timor in East Nusa Tenggara. It's about as far from the Bali crowds as you can get and still find world-class surf — which is exactly the point. The scene revolves around the village of Nemberala (Nembrala) on the west coast, where a string of guesthouses, surf camps and warungs line up behind the reef.
✈️Getting there
Reaching Rote is half the adventure. First fly to Kupang (Timor) — El Tari Airport (KOE) — via Bali (Denpasar) or Jakarta, usually with a connection. From Kupang's Bolok harbour you take the fast ferry across to Rote's port at Ba'a, a crossing of roughly 1.5–2 hours; a slower car ferry also runs but takes longer.
🛵Getting around
Once you're in Nemberala, most of the popular waves are close — T-Land, Boa and the beach breaks are within easy reach, and several spots are walkable or a short paddle from the main strip.
🌤️Climate & season
Rote has a pronounced dry, savanna-like climate — drier than Bali and noticeably so. The dry season runs roughly May to October and is the surf season: this is when consistent groundswell arrives and the dependable southeast trade winds groom the west-coast lefts, holding most of the season's offshore conditions.
