About Seven Palms

Seven Palms is a laid-back and enjoyable reef break in the Mentawais, named for the iconic palms that line the shore and setting the scene for a relaxed yet quality surf session. The wave offers fun, peeling walls that are well within reach for intermediate surfers, with enough punch to keep things interesting. It's a great place to find your rhythm in the Mentawais and enjoy uncrowded, consistent surf in a stunning tropical setting. Expect smiles in the water and shade on the beach.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is shallow at low tide with sharp, live coral that will punish a wipeout — booties are worth considering and reef cuts should be treated promptly in the tropics. A moderate channel current can push you off the peak if you're not paddling to hold position, and sea urchins lurk on the inside shelf near the exit. Boat traffic from charter vessels anchoring in the area can be a hazard, especially in the channel — stay visible and be aware when paddling out.

Getting there

Seven Palms is boat-access only — you'll reach it via liveaboard or day charter out of Padang or one of the resort bases further into the archipelago; look for the seven distinctive palms on the shoreline as your landmark. Entry is typically via a channel on the side of the break, away from the live reef — your boat captain will know the safest drop point. Exit back to the channel rather than trying to come in over the inside reef, particularly at lower tides.

Board

A fun shape or a mid-length groveller (6'0"–6'6") suits the wave well on standard 2–4 ft days — something with volume to help you glide into the softer walls and enjoy the longer rides. If a solid swell pushes it over 5 ft, step up to your regular performance shortboard; there's enough punch on the bigger sets to make a sloppy board feel frustrating.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Mentawai

Full Mentawai surf guide →

If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.

✈️Getting there

All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.

🛵Getting around

The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.

🌤️Climate & season

The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
