About Scarecrows
Scarecrows is an enjoyable and accessible reef break in the Mentawais, producing fun, open-faced waves that suit intermediate surfers keen to explore beyond the beginner zones. The wave peels at a manageable pace, giving riders plenty of room to practice their turns and read the reef. It's not the heaviest break in the region, but it delivers consistent, rewarding surf across a range of conditions. A solid choice for those building towards the more demanding breaks nearby.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide with live coral and scattered sea urchins — wipeouts can result in cuts and stings, so reef booties are worth considering for those not used to reef breaks. A moderate channel rip runs alongside the break and can pull you off the peak if you're not actively paddling back into position. Boat traffic from charter vessels and speedboats transferring surfers between camps is a real hazard — always check before paddling out through the channel.
Scarecrows is boat-access only, reached by speedboat or tender from one of the nearby surf charter boats or camp resorts in the central Mentawais (most commonly operating out of the Silabu or Mapaddegat areas). There is no beach walk or paddle from shore — your skipper will drop you on the channel edge and pick you up at a pre-agreed spot; communicate your exit point clearly before paddling out.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'0"–6'4" range suits most conditions here, giving you the drive to link turns on the open face. On smaller, mushier days a fish or mid-length will help you generate speed through the slower sections.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
