About Nipussi
Nipussi is a fun Mentawai reef break that dishes out punchy, workable waves ideal for intermediate surfers looking to sharpen their game. The wave offers both left and right options with enough juice to practise powerful turns and the occasional tube section. It tends to be less crowded than the marquee spots, making it a rewarding find on a good swell day. A consistent and playful wave that suits a wide range of boards.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide with sharp coral and sea urchins lurking in the impact zone — reef booties are strongly recommended and falls at low water can result in nasty lacerations. A moderate rip runs along the channel on bigger swells, which can push you off the take-off zone if you're not watching your positioning. Boat traffic from passing charters can be an issue in the channel, so keep your wits about you when paddling out.
Nipussi is boat-access only — you'll reach it via a chartered surf boat or a day trip tender from one of the liveaboards operating out of Padang or the northern Mentawais. Anchor up in the channel to the side of the break and paddle a short distance to the line-up; there is no beach or land entry point here. Arrange your trip through a Padang-based operator or Mentawai surf charter company, as there is no shoreside infrastructure at the spot.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'0"–6'4" range is the go-to — something with enough volume to catch the punchier sections but with enough rail to drive through turns on the more powerful sets. On smaller, mushier days a fish or mid-length will help you make the most of the wave's playful side; bring a step-up if a solid swell is forecast.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
