About Lance's Right / HT's
Lance's Right, known locally as HT's, is arguably the most famous wave in the Mentawais and one of the finest right-hand reef breaks on the planet. It reels across the reef in long, perfectly shaped barrels that can run for several seconds at a time, offering both speed and tube time in equal measure. Advanced surfers will find sections to suit every approach — from deep tube-riding to carving open faces. Its reputation means it can get crowded, but a good swell here is genuinely world-class.
Local knowledge
The reef at HT's is shallow, sharp and unforgiving — a wipeout on a solid set can send you straight onto live coral, and lacerations are common. Watch for strong lateral currents that push along the reef on bigger swells, making it hard to hold your position and tricky to exit; getting sucked past the end section and into the channel is a real possibility. Boat traffic is a constant hazard — the anchorage sits right behind the break and charter vessels, tenders and water-taxi speedboats move through the channel at all hours, so always check before paddling across.
HT's is boat-access only — you'll arrive by liveaboard or day-charter from Padang (typically 8–12 hours by fast boat) or from a resort charter based out of the Mentawais. Anchor up in the channel behind the break and paddle straight out; the channel provides a clean paddle-out away from the main reef. Exit back to the channel after your ride — don't get caught drifting onto the inside reef section, especially at low tide.
A proven step-up thruster in the 6'4"–6'10" range handles the bulk of HT's conditions — enough volume to paddle into fast, hollow walls but with the rail and rocker to hold through long barrel sections. Bring a gun (7'0"+) if a serious swell is forecast above 8 ft; on rare small, weak days a shortboard or semi-gun in the 6'0"–6'2" range works, but HT's rarely rewards a fish or high-volume board given how quickly the lip throws.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
