About Iceland

Iceland is a raw and powerful reef break in the Mentawais that lives up to its chilly name with cold, heavy waves that demand respect from advanced surfers. The wave breaks with speed and force, producing thick, barrelling sections over a sharp reef that requires precision on the take-off. It tends to be less crowded than the headline spots in the region, offering a more uncrowded experience for those willing to seek it out. Surfers comfortable on hollow reef waves will find it deeply satisfying.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef at Iceland is shallow, sharp, and unforgiving — a wipeout on a set wave puts you directly in the firing line of live coral that can inflict deep lacerations. The heavy, fast-pitching barrel leaves little margin for error on the take-off, and a caught inside situation is genuinely punishing. Rips run along the reef on bigger swells, so know your exit before you paddle out.

Getting there

Iceland is boat-access only — you'll reach it via charter or day-trip boat out of Padang or from a liveaboard operating in the Mentawais. Anchor up in the channel and paddle a short distance to the lineup; entry and exit are easiest through the channel on the shoulder of the break, away from the main peak. There are no warungs or land infrastructure here, so come self-sufficient with wax, first aid, and plenty of water.

Board

Bring a proven step-up — something in the 6'4"–6'10" range with enough volume to get into the fast, thick walls early but with the rail to hold through the barrel. On smaller, punchier days a shortboard you trust in hollow surf works fine, but leave the fish at home; this wave rewards performance shapes that can handle speed and power.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Mentawai

Full Mentawai surf guide →

If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.

✈️Getting there

All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.

🛵Getting around

The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.

🌤️Climate & season

The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
