About Hideaways
Hideaways lives up to its name as a tucked-away gem in the Mentawais that rewards advanced surfers with powerful, hollow reef waves. The break can throw up serious barrels and has a fast, critical takeoff that demands precise timing and commitment. On the right swell it's an isolated paradise, with the kind of empty, high-quality waves that the Mentawais are famous for. Not a spot for the inexperienced — the reef is shallow and the wave punishes hesitation.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow, live coral and unforgiving — wipeouts on the wrong section will put you on dry reef, and sea urchins are scattered across the flats. A strong lateral current runs along the reef on bigger swells, making it easy to get swept out of position and into the channel; know your exit before you paddle out. Boat traffic from passing charter vessels can be an issue in the channel, especially during peak season.
Hideaways is boat-access only — you'll need a charter boat or a day-trip tender out of one of the nearby camps in the central Mentawais. Anchor or moor in the channel, then paddle directly to the lineup; there's no beach entry. Exit via the channel after your session and signal your boat early, as the current can push you down the reef faster than expected.
Bring a proven step-up — something in the 6'4"–6'10" range with a bit of extra volume under the chest and a narrower tail to hold in the steep, hollow face. On smaller, cleaner days a shortboard or a slightly fuller performance shape works well, but don't bother with a fish; this wave rewards rail surfing and fast, committed drops over looseness.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
