About Good Times
Good Times is a fittingly named Mentawai reef break that delivers exactly that — enjoyable, cruisy waves with plenty of room to have fun. Intermediate surfers will appreciate the wave's forgiving shape and consistent walls that allow for flowing, expressive surfing. It lacks the raw aggression of the archipelago's heavier spots, making it a go-to for warming up or winding down. A reliable, feel-good wave that rarely disappoints.
Local knowledge
Although more forgiving than most Mentawai reefs, the coral shelf beneath Good Times is shallow at low tide and sharp enough to do real damage on a wipeout — booties are worth considering. Watch for the channel current that runs along the reef on the push and pull of the tide, and keep an eye on boat traffic as charter vessels and water taxis regularly pass through the anchorage area.
Good Times is boat-access only, reached by a short tender ride from your charter or liveaboard anchored nearby — there is no beach or land access from the islands here. Paddle out via the channel on the reef's edge to avoid scraping over live coral; the same channel is your safest route back to the boat.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'0"–6'4" range suits the wave's playful walls perfectly on a standard swell, giving you enough foam to generate speed through its open sections. On smaller, weaker days step down to a fish or hybrid for extra paddle power and flow.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
