About Bintangs
Bintangs is a friendlier, more forgiving reef break in the Mentawais, offering fun, rolling waves that are well suited to intermediate surfers looking to build their reef experience. The wave breaks with less aggression than many of its neighbours, giving riders time to find their feet and work the face. It can produce some tidy walls for carving and the odd smaller barrel when conditions align. A great option for those stepping up from beach breaks for the first time.
Local knowledge
Although Bintangs is one of the more forgiving reefs in the Mentawais, it's still a live coral reef that gets shallow at lower tides — a wipeout at the wrong moment can result in coral rash or worse, so booties and a rashie are strongly advised. Watch for sea urchins in the shallower sections near the inside, and be aware of strong lateral currents that can push you off the peak during bigger swells. Boat traffic is a constant in the Mentawais — always check for passing charters and water taxis before paddling out or kicking out of a wave.
Bintangs is a boat-access-only break, reached by speedboat or liveaboard from the main hub of Padang on the Sumatran mainland, or from surf camps operating out of the southern Mentawai islands. Most surfers will be dropped off by their charter and anchor nearby while the crew tends the boat in deeper water. There is no shore access, warung, or land-based infrastructure — everything you need (water, wax, first aid) should be on your vessel.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range covers the bulk of conditions here — enough volume to cruise the rolling, workable walls but enough rail to get into the occasional barrel section. On smaller, mushier days bring a fish or hybrid to keep the fun alive; there's no need for a step-up unless a solid, unexpected swell pushes through.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
