About A-Frames

A-Frames does exactly what its name suggests, breaking symmetrically into quality lefts and rights off a defined peak over reef. It's an engaging intermediate wave with enough shape and power to practise a full range of manoeuvres in both directions. The split peak means the crowd naturally spreads, giving each surfer a fair share of waves. A versatile and fun option that works well on a variety of swell sizes.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is shallow, sharp, and live — a wipeout at low tide can mean a serious scraping or worse, so reef booties are strongly advised. Watch for sea urchins lurking in the cracks around the entry and exit zones. Boat traffic from passing surf charters is a constant in the Mentawais; always be visible when paddling out and stay aware of your position relative to anchored vessels.

Getting there

A-Frames is boat-access only — you'll reach it via live-aboard charter or day boat out of Padang or one of the resort camps in the Telos/South Mentawai area; no beach or land access exists. Boats typically anchor nearby and surfers paddle directly to the peak; have someone watch from the boat for timing your return in choppier conditions. A few resort camps in the region can arrange day trips, but confirm logistics with your operator as anchoring spots shift with swell direction.

Board

A versatile all-rounder thrives here — a good everyday shortboard (6'0"–6'4" for most surfers) handles the majority of swells and lets you work both the left and right freely. On smaller, softer days a fish or hybrid will keep things fun, while a step-up is worth bringing if a solid 6-foot-plus swell is in the forecast.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Mentawai

Full Mentawai surf guide →

If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.

✈️Getting there

All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.

🛵Getting around

The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.

🌤️Climate & season

The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
