About Tampah
Tampah is a mellow beach break on Lombok's coastline that offers a welcoming environment for beginners taking their first steps in the ocean. The sandy bottom removes much of the hazard associated with reef-lined Lombok spots, and the rolling, forgiving waves are ideal for learning to pop up and find your balance. The beach itself is quiet and uncrowded, giving new surfers plenty of room to practise without pressure. A solid choice for those early days of a surf trip before tackling the island's more challenging reefs.
Local knowledge
Sandy bottom keeps the reef danger low, but watch for stronger-than-expected rip currents that can form along the beach, especially on bigger swells — beginners should learn to identify the darker, choppier channels between sandbars and paddle out of a rip sideways rather than against it. Occasional sea urchins can lurk in shallow patches near the shoreline, so shuffle your feet in the shallows rather than stepping down hard. Boat traffic is minimal, but local fishing boats do operate along this stretch of coast, so stay aware when paddling out wide.
From Kuta Lombok, head west along the coastal road toward Selong Belanak and look for the Tampah turnoff — the beach is a short walk down a sandy track from where you can park roadside or near any local warung. Entry is straightforward directly off the beach; pick a sandy channel between sandbars for the easiest paddle out, and exit the same way by angling back in with a wave to your chosen stretch of sand.
A longboard or a wide, high-volume mini-mal (8–9 ft) is ideal here — maximum float and stability for learning to pop up on the slow, rolling waves. On the rare bigger swell day a funboard or mid-length will still do the job; leave the shortboard at home unless you're just messing around between beginner sessions.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
🌤️Climate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
