About Serangan / Serenting
Serangan — also known as Serenting — is an intermediate reef break on Lombok's south coast that offers fun, workable waves without the intensity of the more exposed outer reefs. The wave breaks with a reasonable amount of wall, giving surfers the chance to practice turns and build flow on a variety of swell sizes. It handles a moderate swell well and is a solid option when bigger spots are maxing out. A good all-rounder for intermediates looking to log time on a real reef.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide and unforgiving on wipeouts — reef booties are strongly recommended and sea urchins are common in the cracks, so shuffle your feet on entry and exit. A cross-shore rip runs along the reef edge on bigger swells, so know your channel and don't let it pull you out of position. Boat and fishing vessel traffic passes through the area, so stay aware when paddling out.
From Kuta Lombok, head east along the coastal road toward Gerupuk and look for the Serenting turn-off; local warungs near the beach make a handy landmark. You can paddle out directly through the channel on the inside — time your entry for a lull and aim to exit via the same channel rather than scrambling over the reef. On smaller swells the paddle out is straightforward; on bigger days consider negotiating a short jukung (outrigger) ride from the beach with one of the local fishermen.
A versatile shortboard or a mid-length in the 7'0"–7'6" range covers most conditions here and suits the wave's workable walls perfectly. On smaller, mushier days a fish or hybrid will keep you generating speed; when a solid south swell fills in, step up to a performance shortboard with a bit more volume to handle the steeper sections.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
🌤️Climate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
