About Mawun
Mawun is a sheltered bay on Lombok's south coast where a gentle reef break makes it one of the friendliest spots on the island for beginners. The horseshoe-shaped bay blocks much of the swell energy, producing smaller, slower waves that are ideal for learning to stand up and find your feet. The setting is strikingly beautiful, with white sand and turquoise water framed by green headlands. On bigger swells the wave picks up a little more punch, offering a natural step-up for those ready to progress.
Local knowledge
Despite the beginner-friendly reputation, the reef underneath is live coral and can be surprisingly shallow at low tide — a wipeout on the inside section can put you on the bottom fast, so check the tide before paddling out. Sea urchins lurk in the reef crevices near the entry and exit points, so reef booties are a smart call for newcomers. On bigger south swells the bay loses its shelter and a persistent rip runs along the eastern headland — beginners should stay close to the sandier central section of the bay.
From Kuta Lombok head west along the coastal road for roughly 8 km, following signs to Mawun Beach — there is a small, well-signposted car park with a modest entrance fee and a handful of warungs selling cold drinks and snacks right on the sand. Entry is straightforward: paddle out from the central beach where the sand extends furthest onto the reef, giving the softest, most forgiving take-off zone. Exit the same way, aiming for the white sand rather than the rocky flanks of the bay.
A longboard or a wide, high-volume funboard (8–9 ft) is the ideal tool here — the waves are slow and peeling, and extra foam helps beginners generate speed and find their feet. On the rare bigger swell days, a mid-length around 7–7'6" lets more experienced surfers draw out turns without getting caught inside.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
🌤️Climate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
