About Mawi

Mawi is a surf spot located about 30 minutes west of Kuta Lombok, and is one of the favorites among intermediate and advanced surfers looking for a more challenging, fast, and powerful wave. The bay is horseshoe-shaped, surrounded by green hills, and offers a left with tubular sections and a shorter but workable right. Mawi combines relatively easy access, consistent power, and natural beauty, with fewer crowds than other nearby spots. It's ideal for those who want a quality session without traveling to the far west like Desert Point.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef at Mawi is shallow and sharp, especially on the inside where the left throws its tubular section over dry coral at lower tides — go on the mid-to-high push if you're unsure. The horseshoe bay generates a strong rip that runs along the rocks on the left side, which is also your paddle channel, so respect it and use it rather than fight it. Sea urchins and rocks line the entry/exit, and the takeoff zone gets tight and competitive when it's firing.

Getting there

It's roughly 30 minutes west of Kuta Lombok down a rough, potholed track that has improved over the years but still favors a scooter or 4WD; there are usually local lads collecting a small parking fee at the top of the bay. Walk down to the sand and paddle out using the rip/channel on the left-hand (river/rock) side of the bay, which carries you out toward the peak — don't try to punch straight through the impact zone. A couple of simple warungs at the beach handle drinks, food and a place to watch the swell.

Board

Bring your standard shortboard for chest-to-head-high days, but Mawi has real power and a hollow wall, so on solid swell step up to a 6'4"–6'8" with extra paddle speed and drive to make the steep drops and barrel sections. Keep something with a bit more rail in the quiver for the bigger days when the left really turns on.

Localism

moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Lombok

Full Lombok surf guide →

Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.

✈️Getting there

Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.

🛵Getting around

A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.

🌤️Climate & season

Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
