About Gerupuk Outside Right
Gerupuk Outside Right is a lively reef break that steps things up from the inside peaks, offering faster, more powerful waves for surfers ready to push their skills. The right-hander can produce solid, punchy sections with good wall when the swell fills in, rewarding surfers who can read the line-up and trim with some speed. Intermediates will find plenty to work with here, from carves to the occasional tube section. A boat ride from the beach is the standard approach.
Local knowledge
Shallow, live coral reef is the main threat — a wipeout on a bigger set can put you on the bottom fast, so reef booties are strongly recommended. A rip runs along the reef edge and can sweep you off the peak between sets; the boat-access setup means you must stay aware of your position relative to the boat and other craft ferrying surfers in and out. Sea urchins lurk in the reef cracks, making any scramble on the reef risky.
Head to the fishing village of Gerupuk on Lombok's south coast — from Kuta Lombok it's roughly a 20-minute drive east. Negotiate a boat charter from the beach at the water's edge (local jukung fishermen and surf camps run regular runs out to the break); there's no paddling out directly from shore to the outside peaks. Agree your pick-up signal with the boatman before paddling off — communication is key when it's pumping and boats are circling.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range handles the everyday punchy conditions well; step up to a stiffer, slightly longer performance board or a step-up around 6'8"–7'0" when solid swell pushes the wave into proper overhead-plus territory. Avoid anything too loose or low-volume — the faster, hollower sections reward a board with drive and hold.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
🌤️Climate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
