About Ekas Outside
Ekas Outside is Lombok's premier big-wave reef break and one of the most powerful waves in the entire island chain, drawing advanced surfers chasing serious slabs and heavy barrels. When a large south swell arrives, the outer reef unleashes thick, fast tubes that demand experience, commitment and solid big-wave judgment. Shallow water and strong currents make wipeouts consequential, so only confident advanced surfers should paddle out. The reward for those who earn it is a world-class, uncrowded wave in a remote and beautiful setting.
Local knowledge
The outer reef is extremely shallow at low tide — a serious wipeout or hold-down can drive you onto live coral that will fillet exposed skin. Strong, unpredictable rips run along the reef edge and can sweep you wide of the channel quickly; know your exit before you paddle out. On bigger swells, two-wave hold-downs are a real possibility, and the distance from shore means help is slow to arrive if things go wrong.
Base yourself at one of the small guesthouses or warungs around Ekas Bay — most operators on the bay run boat transfers directly to the outer reef, which is by far the safest and most practical option (expect a short 5–10 minute ride). Paddling out from the beach is possible via the channel on the southern side of the reef, but the distance and current make the boat option strongly recommended, especially on bigger days; arrange a pick-up time with your skipper and agree on a signal if you need early retrieval.
Leave your everyday shortboard at home — a step-up or semi-gun in the 6'4"–7'2" range is the go-to for the powerful, fast-pitching barrels here. On rare smaller swells a performance shortboard works, but when the reef is doing what it's known for, extra volume, length and hold will keep you in control through the drop and under the lip.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
🌤️Climate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
