About Are Guling Left
Are Guling Left is a reef break on Lombok's developing surf coast that serves up consistent left-hand waves in a far less crowded setting than Bali. The wave offers good length and shape on a solid swell, with open faces that suit intermediate surfers looking to practise longer rides and linking turns. The reef is relatively accessible, though care is needed at lower tides. The surrounding scenery and uncrowded water make it well worth seeking out.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow and sharp at lower tides — wipeouts can result in nasty coral scrapes, and sea urchins are present in crevices near the entry zone, so booties are worth considering. A moderate rip runs along the reef's edge on bigger swells, which can push you wide of the channel if you're not paying attention. Boat traffic from fishing vessels and the occasional dive/snorkel trip operates in the area, so stay alert when paddling out.
Are Guling is on Lombok's west coast — head south from Senggigi through the coastal villages and follow the road signs toward Are Guling; you can park near the local warung at the clifftop or roadside. Paddle out via the channel on the right side of the break where the reef deepens, and use the same channel to exit — avoid scrambling over the reef at low tide. It's a short paddle to the lineup once you've found the channel.
A mid-length or performance shortboard in the 6'2"–6'8" range suits the wave well on a standard swell, giving you enough foam to link the longer sections. On smaller, slower days a fish or fun shape will help you generate speed across the open face; bring a step-up if a solid 4–6 ft swell is forecast.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
🌤️Climate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
