About Speedies

Speedies is the most intense and coveted section of G-Land's legendary left, firing with a ferocity that earns its expert-only status. When the swell hits the reef at the right angle, it produces some of the longest, fastest barrels in the Indonesian archipelago — a sucking, screaming tube that demands full commitment and zero hesitation. Wipeouts here are serious affairs on a very shallow, unforgiving reef, so only the most experienced tube riders should paddle out. If you make one, it will be a wave you talk about for the rest of your life.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef at Speedies is brutally shallow — a live coral shelf that can lacerate and hold you down in a heartbeat on a heavy wipeout. The barrels here are long and fast, meaning hold-downs can be multi-wave and disorienting; getting worked on the inside is a genuine injury risk. Strong lateral currents run along the break, and boat traffic from the charter fleet anchored in the bay demands constant vigilance when paddling out and back in.

Getting there

G-Land (Grajagan Bay) sits inside Alas Purwo National Park on Java's remote southeastern tip — almost all surfers arrive by boat charter from Bali (roughly 4–5 hours) or fly into Banyuwangi and transfer by road and speedboat. The surf camps (Joyo's, Bobby's, Kuta Reef Camp) handle the logistics and anchor offshore; you paddle directly from the boat or camp jetty and line up along the reef. Exit back to camp via the channel — do not try to exit over the reef.

Board

Bring a high-performance shortboard (6'2"–6'6") with a narrow tail and plenty of rocker to handle the speed and the drop — this is not a wave for a fish or a hybrid. On bigger swells (6 ft+) step up to a gun (6'8"–7'2") because the drop at Speedies gets nearly vertical and you need the hold and drive to make the section.

Localism

moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Java

Full Java surf guide →

Java is Indonesia's most populous and culturally dense island, yet for surfers it remains one of the archipelago's great escapes. Overshadowed by Bali to the east and the Mentawai boats to the west, Java's long, exposed south coast quietly serves up world-class waves with a fraction of the crowds.

✈️Getting there

Most international surfers fly into Bali (Denpasar/DPS) or Jakarta (CGK). For G-Land, the classic route is from Bali: drive west to Gilimanuk, take the short ferry across to Ketapang/Banyuwangi in East Java, then continue overland and by boat into Alas Purwo National Park. Many surfers simply book a transfer or surf-camp package from Bali, which can run as a long road-and-ferry day or a faster speedboat charter across the strait.

🛵Getting around

Java is huge and its south-coast surf zones are spread far apart, so there's no single hub. Scooters are cheap and easy to rent in beach towns like Batu Karas and Pangandaran and are perfect for short hops to local breaks — but Javanese traffic and long-haul roads can be intense for the inexperienced.

🌤️Climate & season

Java has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly May to September and is prime surf time — consistent Indian Ocean groundswell, lighter and more favourable winds, and the cleaner conditions that make G-Land fire. This is when the south coast is at its best.
