About Karang Hawu

Karang Hawu is a characterful reef break on the West Java coast that produces lively, mid-length waves for intermediate surfers. The reef creates defined peaks that allow for sharp turns and the occasional barrel section on the right swell. The dramatic volcanic rock formations surrounding the break make it as striking to look at as it is to surf. Come prepared for a reef bottom and watch the exposed rocks on the inside as the tide drops.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is shallow and sharp — wipeouts on the inside section can put you onto exposed volcanic rock, especially on a dropping tide, so booties are strongly advised. A sucking rip runs along the reef edge that can drag you toward the rocks on the eastern side of the break; know your exit before paddling out. Sea urchins colonise the reef shelf, so avoid putting your feet down anywhere shallow.

Getting there

Karang Hawu sits roughly 100 km south of Jakarta near Cisolok — take the coast road toward the Karang Hawu beach area, where roadside parking is available near the volcanic rock formations and a handful of small warungs. Paddle out from the sandy channel on the western side of the rocks; avoid entering over the reef shelf directly as even moderate swell surges hard across it. Exit the same channel and time your paddle-in between sets.

Board

A mid-length thruster (6'4"–7'0") with a bit of rocker handles the punchy reef peaks well on standard 3–5 ft swells; step up to a 7'2"–7'6" gun when solid south swells push it overhead and the reef starts showing its speed. Leave the fish at home — the reef bottom and hollow inside section reward boards that can drive through and release quickly, not float.

Localism

moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Java

Full Java surf guide →

Java is Indonesia's most populous and culturally dense island, yet for surfers it remains one of the archipelago's great escapes. Overshadowed by Bali to the east and the Mentawai boats to the west, Java's long, exposed south coast quietly serves up world-class waves with a fraction of the crowds.

✈️Getting there

Most international surfers fly into Bali (Denpasar/DPS) or Jakarta (CGK). For G-Land, the classic route is from Bali: drive west to Gilimanuk, take the short ferry across to Ketapang/Banyuwangi in East Java, then continue overland and by boat into Alas Purwo National Park. Many surfers simply book a transfer or surf-camp package from Bali, which can run as a long road-and-ferry day or a faster speedboat charter across the strait.

🛵Getting around

Java is huge and its south-coast surf zones are spread far apart, so there's no single hub. Scooters are cheap and easy to rent in beach towns like Batu Karas and Pangandaran and are perfect for short hops to local breaks — but Javanese traffic and long-haul roads can be intense for the inexperienced.

🌤️Climate & season

Java has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly May to September and is prime surf time — consistent Indian Ocean groundswell, lighter and more favourable winds, and the cleaner conditions that make G-Land fire. This is when the south coast is at its best.
