About Serangan
Serangan, sometimes called Turtle Island Reef, offers a fun, workable right-hander that breaks across a reef just off the reclaimed island on Bali's south coast. The wave is long and relatively forgiving compared to the Bukit heavies, making it a solid step-up for intermediates looking to build reef-break confidence. It can get sectiony on smaller swells but links up nicely when a proper swell fills in, delivering smooth, rideable walls. The area is sheltered enough to make for an enjoyable session even when conditions are tricky elsewhere.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide — sharp coral and scattered sea urchins make wipeouts punishing, so always check the tide before paddling out. A moderate rip runs along the reef edge which can be useful for the paddle-out but will pull you wide of the break if you're not paying attention. Boat and jukung traffic is constant around the Serangan harbour channel, so stay alert to your surroundings, especially near the entry and exit.
From Sanur or Kuta, head to Pulau Serangan (Turtle Island) via Jalan Serangan — parking is easy near the harbour area on the reclaimed land. Paddle out from the beach or rocky shore near the southern tip of the island, using the channel on the reef's inside edge to avoid the worst of the reef on entry; look for the jukung boats as a landmark for where the channel sits. A couple of small warungs near the parking area are good for a post-surf cold drink.
A versatile shortboard or a mid-length (7'0"–7'6") works well here for most conditions and suits the wave's forgiving, walled nature. On smaller, sectiony days a fish or hybrid hull will help you generate speed and connect sections; bring a step-up if a solid south swell pushes the size above head-high.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Bali
Full Bali surf guide →Bali is the beating heart of Indonesian surfing — the island that put the archipelago on the world surf map back in the early 1970s, and still the easiest place on earth to fall in love with riding waves in the tropics. It packs an absurd density of quality breaks into a small island: machine-perfect reef barrels on the Bukit Peninsula, mellow beach breaks on the west coast, and a Bali Sea wave or two over on the east.
✈️Getting there
Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.
🛵Getting around
The default surfer transport is a scooter (110–150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high — many travellers come unstuck here.
🌤️Climate & season
Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — sunny, lower humidity, and the prime surf window for the south and west coasts, with consistent groundswell and clean morning offshore winds. This is peak season; expect crowds and book ahead.
