About Sanur Reef
Sanur Reef is a quality right-hander that peels across the fringing reef off Sanur's calm, picturesque beachfront. The wave can be surprisingly powerful and fast when a good swell wraps around Bali's southeast coast, offering long rides with punchy wall sections. Because it breaks over a shallow coral reef, advanced surfers are best equipped to handle the occasional heavy set and the consequences of a mistimed wipeout. The sheltered bay setting keeps it more consistent than some of Bali's exposed breaks, and the relaxed beachside vibe adds to the appeal.
Local knowledge
The primary danger is the shallow, live coral reef — a wipeout on a bigger set can put you directly onto the reef, so booties are strongly recommended and a helmet isn't overkill on solid days. Watch for sea urchins in the shallower sections near the inside, particularly at lower tides. Boat and jukung traffic crossing the channel is a real hazard; the waters off Sanur are busy with boats heading to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida, so stay alert in the lineup and during your paddle out.
Park along the Sanur beachfront promenade (Jalan Danau Tamblingan side) and walk down to the beach near the main boat jetty — there are warungs and rental shacks here to get your bearings. Paddle out via the channel to the north of the breaking wave to avoid paddling over dry reef; time your exit through the same channel and come in before the shallows close out toward the shore. At lower tides, study the reef before paddling out — what looks like a clean channel can turn into a rocky scramble on the way back in.
A shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range with a bit of extra volume handles the punchy wall sections well on a standard swell; step up to a 6'8"–7'0" round-pin or step-up when solid south swells wrap in and the wave gets hollow and fast. Skip the fish or fun-shape — this reef rewards boards with drive and hold, not ones that bog out when the wave throws.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Bali
Full Bali surf guide →Bali is the beating heart of Indonesian surfing — the island that put the archipelago on the world surf map back in the early 1970s, and still the easiest place on earth to fall in love with riding waves in the tropics. It packs an absurd density of quality breaks into a small island: machine-perfect reef barrels on the Bukit Peninsula, mellow beach breaks on the west coast, and a Bali Sea wave or two over on the east.
✈️Getting there
Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.
🛵Getting around
The default surfer transport is a scooter (110–150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high — many travellers come unstuck here.
🌤️Climate & season
Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — sunny, lower humidity, and the prime surf window for the south and west coasts, with consistent groundswell and clean morning offshore winds. This is peak season; expect crowds and book ahead.
