About Nyang Nyang

Nyang Nyang is one of Bali's most remote surf spots, requiring a long trek across open clifftops to reach a vast, exposed beach backed by raw scenery. The reef break here throws up powerful, unpredictable walls and occasional hollow sections that reward patience and skill. Crowds are almost non-existent, but the isolation means no help if things go wrong — advanced surfers who make the effort will find a raw, uncrowded slice of Bali's southern coastline. Bring everything you need; there are no facilities on the beach.

Local knowledge

Hazards

Sharp, shallow reef sections punish wipeouts hard, and the exposed location means swells arrive with full open-ocean power and little warning — sets can catch you badly out of position. A strong, shifting rip runs along the beach and can make re-entry to the lineup exhausting; there is absolutely no one on hand to assist if you get into trouble. Sea urchins colonise the reef shelf near the exit, so booties are strongly recommended.

Getting there

From the Nyang Nyang beach car park off Jalan Gunung Payung, follow the clifftop trail south for roughly 20–30 minutes of steep, uneven descent to the beach — wear shoes you can ditch, and carry everything you need as there are zero facilities at the bottom. Paddle out from the southern end of the beach where the rip current gives you the easiest channel through the reef; exit the same way and time it carefully between sets. Allow extra time on the hike back up, especially after a long session.

Board

A step-up thruster in the 6'4"–6'10" range is the go-to for the powerful, punchy walls this reef dishes up on a solid south or southwest swell; bring a semi-gun (7'0"+) if there's any chance of it pushing overhead-plus. Leave the fish at home — this is not a small-wave cruising spot.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Bali

Full Bali surf guide →

Bali is the beating heart of Indonesian surfing — the island that put the archipelago on the world surf map back in the early 1970s, and still the easiest place on earth to fall in love with riding waves in the tropics. It packs an absurd density of quality breaks into a small island: machine-perfect reef barrels on the Bukit Peninsula, mellow beach breaks on the west coast, and a Bali Sea wave or two over on the east.

✈️Getting there

Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.

🛵Getting around

The default surfer transport is a scooter (110–150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high — many travellers come unstuck here.

🌤️Climate & season

Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — sunny, lower humidity, and the prime surf window for the south and west coasts, with consistent groundswell and clean morning offshore winds. This is peak season; expect crowds and book ahead.
