About Legian
Legian Beach sits just north of Kuta and shares much of the same easy, beach-break character, making it another ideal playground for beginners. The waves are soft and rolling on most days, with a forgiving sandy bottom that takes the sting out of wipeouts. The beach is slightly less hectic than Kuta proper, giving newer surfers a little more breathing room in the water. A relaxed local surf scene and easy access make it an approachable spot to clock up your early hours on a board.
Local knowledge
The shore break can dump harder than it looks on bigger swells, catching beginners off guard — always watch a few sets before paddling out. Rip currents form between sandbars and shift with the tide, so stay aware of your position relative to the beach; if caught, paddle across the rip rather than fighting it. Busy boat and jet-ski traffic operates along this stretch of coast, particularly in the mornings, so be alert when paddling beyond the break.
Legian Beach is easily reached by road from central Seminyak or Kuta — take Jalan Legian north and follow the gang (alley) signs down to the beach; paid parking is available roadside or at nearby warungs. No boat required; simply walk to the waterline and paddle straight out through the sandy shore break. The beach has multiple entry and exit points along its length, and surf school shacks and warungs right on the sand make it easy to orientate yourself.
A large, thick foam softboard (9–10 ft) or a longboard is ideal for learning here, keeping you stable on the gentle, rolling waves. If you've graduated past beginner stage, a mid-length or mini-mal handles the typical 1–3 ft conditions comfortably; only bother with something shorter if a solid swell pushes the wave face up to head-high or above.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Bali
Full Bali surf guide →Bali is the beating heart of Indonesian surfing — the island that put the archipelago on the world surf map back in the early 1970s, and still the easiest place on earth to fall in love with riding waves in the tropics. It packs an absurd density of quality breaks into a small island: machine-perfect reef barrels on the Bukit Peninsula, mellow beach breaks on the west coast, and a Bali Sea wave or two over on the east.
✈️Getting there
Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.
🛵Getting around
The default surfer transport is a scooter (110–150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high — many travellers come unstuck here.
🌤️Climate & season
Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — sunny, lower humidity, and the prime surf window for the south and west coasts, with consistent groundswell and clean morning offshore winds. This is peak season; expect crowds and book ahead.
