About Ketewel
Ketewel is a fun reef break sitting along Bali's quieter east-facing coast, catching swells that wrap around the island's southeastern tip. It breaks as a right-hander over a coral shelf, producing rolling, punchy waves that are great for intermediates looking to sharpen their turns and read reef-break rhythms. The crowd is usually light compared to Bali's south-coast hotspots, giving surfers plenty of room to experiment. Watch the tide — it can get very shallow at low water over the reef.
Local knowledge
The coral shelf gets dangerously shallow at low tide — a wipeout can mean reef rash or worse, so time your session around mid to high tide. Sea urchins are scattered across the reef bottom and on the entry rocks, so booties are strongly recommended. There's a moderate shore-break rip on the inside that can push you sideways toward the rocky section of the beach if you're not paying attention on your exit.
Ketewel sits along Jalan Ketewel, roughly 20 minutes east of Sanur — look for the small warung and the narrow track down to the beach near the village banjar. Park roadside or at the warung and pick your way down the rocky shoreline; paddle out through the channel on the northern side of the break to avoid the worst of the shore-break and the reef edge. Exit the same way — don't let the current push you south onto the exposed reef section.
A versatile shortboard or a performance mid-length (7'0"–7'6") handles the rolling, punchy rights well across most conditions. On smaller, weaker days a fish or a hybrid will help you generate speed through the shallower sections; if a solid east or southeast swell pushes it overhead-plus, step up to a slightly thicker, more pulled-in shape to handle the steeper drops over the shallow shelf.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Bali
Full Bali surf guide →Bali is the beating heart of Indonesian surfing — the island that put the archipelago on the world surf map back in the early 1970s, and still the easiest place on earth to fall in love with riding waves in the tropics. It packs an absurd density of quality breaks into a small island: machine-perfect reef barrels on the Bukit Peninsula, mellow beach breaks on the west coast, and a Bali Sea wave or two over on the east.
✈️Getting there
Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.
🛵Getting around
The default surfer transport is a scooter (110–150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high — many travellers come unstuck here.
🌤️Climate & season
Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — sunny, lower humidity, and the prime surf window for the south and west coasts, with consistent groundswell and clean morning offshore winds. This is peak season; expect crowds and book ahead.
