About Green Bowl

Green Bowl is a secluded, powerful reef break tucked beneath dramatic limestone cliffs on Bali's Bukit Peninsula. The wave breaks in both directions over a shallow reef, producing steep, hollow barrels that demand respect and commitment. Its remote location β€” reached by a long staircase descent β€” keeps crowds manageable, but the heavy shore-dump and exposed reef make it strictly one for experienced surfers. Come at mid to high tide and be prepared for a solid paddle out through the impact zone.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is shallow, sharp, and live β€” a wipeout on the inside at low tide can put you straight onto coral with little water between you and it. Sea urchins are thick along the reef shelf and near the cliff base, so booties are strongly recommended. The shore-dump is punishing: getting caught inside means a washing-machine ride over dry reef, and a rip running along the cliff face can make exit tricky when the swell is up.

Getting there

From the main Bukit road near Ungasan, follow the signs toward Green Bowl Beach and park at the top of the cliff β€” a steep descent of roughly 300 steps cut into the limestone brings you down to the beach. Entry is directly off the beach; time your paddle-out to duck through the shore-dump between sets, hugging the left side of the bay where the water is slightly deeper. Exit the same way β€” don't linger on the reef shelf and watch your footing on the wet stairs on the way back up.

Board

A high-performance shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range works well for the standard 3–6 ft range β€” something with a bit of volume under the chest to help you paddle through the impact zone. When a solid swell pushes it over 6 ft and the barrels get genuinely heavy, step up to a 6'8"–7'0" step-up with more thickness and a pulled-in tail to hold through the steep drops.

Localism

mellow β€” relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Bali

Full Bali surf guide β†’

Bali is the beating heart of Indonesian surfing β€” the island that put the archipelago on the world surf map back in the early 1970s, and still the easiest place on earth to fall in love with riding waves in the tropics. It packs an absurd density of quality breaks into a small island: machine-perfect reef barrels on the Bukit Peninsula, mellow beach breaks on the west coast, and a Bali Sea wave or two over on the east.

✈️Getting there

Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.

πŸ›΅Getting around

The default surfer transport is a scooter (110–150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high β€” many travellers come unstuck here.

🌀️Climate & season

Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October β€” sunny, lower humidity, and the prime surf window for the south and west coasts, with consistent groundswell and clean morning offshore winds. This is peak season; expect crowds and book ahead.
