About Berawa
Berawa is a reef break sitting just down the coast from Echo Beach, offering a slightly more relaxed crowd while still delivering quality waves. It produces both left and right peaks depending on swell direction, with walls that are well-suited to practising turns and building confidence. The reef is fairly forgiving by Canggu standards, but surfers should stay alert to shifting banks and rips. A solid choice for intermediates looking for a mellower alternative to the area's busier spots.
Local knowledge
The reef here is shallower than it looks at low tide — a wipeout on the inside section can put you onto sharp coral, and sea urchins are present along the reef shelf, so booties are worth considering. A persistent rip runs along the southern edge of the break; useful for paddling out but it can carry you wide of the channel fast if you're not paying attention. Boat and jet-ski traffic picks up in the afternoons servicing the Canggu stretch, so keep your head up when paddling back out.
Park at the small lot near Berawa Beach (Pantai Berawa) off Jalan Pantai Berawa — several warungs and beach clubs mark the beach access path. Paddle out via the channel on the northern side of the break; this keeps you clear of the shallower reef and makes for a straightforward entry. Exit the same way — avoid coming in over the dry reef section on the inside, especially around low tide.
A versatile shortboard or a mid-length (7'0"–8'0") works well here for the everyday 3–5 ft range, giving you enough paddle power for the choppier Canggu conditions while staying manoeuvrable on the walls. Step up to a performance shortboard or a small step-up when solid SW swells push the size to 6 ft+; a fish or fun shape is a great call on the smaller, mushier days.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Bali
Full Bali surf guide →Bali is the beating heart of Indonesian surfing — the island that put the archipelago on the world surf map back in the early 1970s, and still the easiest place on earth to fall in love with riding waves in the tropics. It packs an absurd density of quality breaks into a small island: machine-perfect reef barrels on the Bukit Peninsula, mellow beach breaks on the west coast, and a Bali Sea wave or two over on the east.
✈️Getting there
Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.
🛵Getting around
The default surfer transport is a scooter (110–150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high — many travellers come unstuck here.
🌤️Climate & season
Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — sunny, lower humidity, and the prime surf window for the south and west coasts, with consistent groundswell and clean morning offshore winds. This is peak season; expect crowds and book ahead.
