About Lagundri Bay / The Point
Lagundri Bay is one of Indonesia's most celebrated point breaks, rolling along a sweeping bay on the south coast of Nias with long, mechanical rights that peel beautifully for hundreds of metres. The wave builds gradually over the reef, offering classic long-boarding sections as well as steeper walls for progressive surfing, making it a genuine all-rounder for intermediates. The laid-back village atmosphere and consistent swell window have made this a bucket-list destination for decades. Expect a mix of travelling surfers and friendly locals sharing the lineup.
Local knowledge
The reef at Lagundri is shallow and coral-covered — a wipeout on the inside section at low tide can put you on dry reef fast, so booties and a helmet are worth considering for less experienced surfers. A strong rip runs along the point and can sweep you wide of the channel if you're not watching your positioning; sea urchins lurk in the shallower sections near the rocks at the entry. On bigger swells the hold-downs are serious and the current makes it harder to get back to the peak.
Fly or overland to Teluk Dalam, then take a bemo or ojek roughly 12 km south to Sorake village on the bay — the wave is right in front of the strip of losmen and warungs lining the beach road, so you can't miss it. Paddle out via the deep-water channel on the left side of the point, using the rocky outcrop at the tip as your landmark; exit the same channel to avoid scrambling over reef. Boards and gear can be rinsed and stored at any of the guesthouses along the main strip.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'8" range covers most conditions here — the long walling rights reward a bit of extra volume for paddling into the longer sections. Step up to a 6'8"–7'2" rounded-pin when solid south swells push the wave overhead-plus, and bring a fish or mid-length if you want to milk the smaller, slower days.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Nias
Full Nias surf guide →Off the west coast of North Sumatra, Nias is one of Indonesia's true surf landmarks — home to Lagundri Bay, the right-hand point at the island's southern tip that put the country on the world surf map back in the 1970s. It's a place of pilgrimage, where a single peeling wall over coral has drawn travelling surfers for decades.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers fly into Binaka Airport (GNS) at Gunungsitoli in the north of Nias, usually via Medan (Kualanamu, KNO) on a short domestic hop with Wings Air or similar. From Bali or Jakarta you'll connect through Medan.
🛵Getting around
At Lagundri Bay everything is walkable — the losmen sit right along the point, and you can paddle out from the steps. Many guests don't need transport at all once settled.
🌤️Climate & season
Nias has a tropical equatorial climate — warm and humid year-round, with water temperatures sitting around 27–29°C, so boardshorts and a rash guard are plenty (boots for the reef, not warmth).
