About Kiddies Corner
Kiddies Corner is the friendliest wave in Lagundri Bay, breaking in the sheltered inside section with soft, forgiving walls that are ideal for surfers just finding their feet on a reef. The smaller, slower waves here let beginners focus on technique without the intimidation of the main point's power. It's a great place to build confidence under the watchful eye of local instructors or more experienced friends. When conditions are right it can also be a pleasant longboard wave for mellow sessions.
Local knowledge
Although this is the bay's gentlest wave, it still breaks over a live coral reef that becomes dangerously shallow at low tide — booties are strongly recommended and falling hard onto the reef will cut you up. Sea urchins hide in the coral crevices, so never put your feet down carelessly. A moderate cross-rip runs along the inside section when south swells push through; beginners should stay aware of their position relative to the main point's channel.
Base yourself at one of the warungs or guesthouses lining the beachfront at Lagundri Bay — most are within a two-minute walk of the water. Enter via the sandy channel on the inside of the bay, to the right of the main Sorake/Lagundri point; this avoids the shallower coral sections and is clearly used by local students and instructors daily. Exit the same way and watch for the occasional water-taxi or boat ferrying surfers to the point.
A longboard or big funboard (9'0"–10'0") is ideal for making the most of the slow, rolling walls on offer here. On rare days when a solid south swell pushes a bit more punch into the inside section, a mid-length (7'6"–8'6") will still handle it comfortably — there's no need for a shortboard here.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Nias
Full Nias surf guide →Off the west coast of North Sumatra, Nias is one of Indonesia's true surf landmarks — home to Lagundri Bay, the right-hand point at the island's southern tip that put the country on the world surf map back in the 1970s. It's a place of pilgrimage, where a single peeling wall over coral has drawn travelling surfers for decades.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers fly into Binaka Airport (GNS) at Gunungsitoli in the north of Nias, usually via Medan (Kualanamu, KNO) on a short domestic hop with Wings Air or similar. From Bali or Jakarta you'll connect through Medan.
🛵Getting around
At Lagundri Bay everything is walkable — the losmen sit right along the point, and you can paddle out from the steps. Many guests don't need transport at all once settled.
🌤️Climate & season
Nias has a tropical equatorial climate — warm and humid year-round, with water temperatures sitting around 27–29°C, so boardshorts and a rash guard are plenty (boots for the reef, not warmth).
